Historic judo golds, Neeraj-Yashvir double podium at CWG

India's historic first-ever judo gold medals, a javelin throw double podium led by Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, and a stunning day in the boxing ring, where 10 pugilists marched into the finals, highlighted another memorable day for the country's athletes at the Commonwealth Games in Glasglow on Friday.Judokas Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh created history by becoming India's first Commonwealth Games gold medallists in the sport, while Yamini Mourya added a silver to complete the country's best-ever campaign in judo.

In athletics, Neeraj settled for silver in the men's javelin throw under challenging conditions, while debutant Yashvir Singh produced a sensational personal best with his final attempt to snatch bronze.Neeraj, who owns the Indian javelin national record of 90.23m, began with a 80.97m throw before turning up with a season’s best of 85.83m with his second throw to move up to the top of the standings only to lose the perch to Rumesh later in the round. Sri Lanka's Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage took the lead with his second attempt as he registered a throw of 89.75m, putting the pressure on other opponents.It was also Sri Lanka’s first gold medal at the CWG since 2006 and the first-ever in athletics.

National record holder Tejaswin Shankar overcame a long-standing knee injury and scripted history as he became the first Indian to win a decathlon medal in the Commonwealth Games, clinching a bronze here on Friday. Tejaswin collected a total of 7976 points in the gruelling 10-event discipline competed over two days. He was competing despite having with a chronic patellar tendinitis (jumper's knee) which led to his pulling out from the men's high jump event earlier in the Glasgow Games.
