Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirms that the strike in Beirut targeted Hezbollah’s de facto chief of staff Haytham Ali Tabatabai. “Prime Minister Netanyahu ordered the strike on the recommendation of the defense minister and the IDF chief of staff,” continues the statement. “Israel is determined to act to achieve its goals, in any place and at any time.” Tabatabai is Hezbollah’s de facto chief of staff, and is considered to be the number two leader in the terror group, after secretary general Naim Qassem. According to Lebanese media, the strike took place in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a known Hezbollah stronghold.

Israel has increased its strikes on Hezbollah in recent weeks amid accusations that the terror group was violating the year-old ceasefire and in frustration at lagging Lebanese efforts to disarm the terror group.
