Heavy rains batter Kerala & Odisha , chokes Mumbai

Heavy rainfall lashed parts of Mumbai on Saturday, leaving streets waterlogged in many areas, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for the Maharashtra capital as well as the neighbouring districts of Thane, Palghar and Raigad.Incessant downpour lashed Mumbai on Saturday, normal life remained disrupted with the government ordering closure of schools and colleges. Heavy rains threw life out of gear, triggering incidents of road cave-in, tree fall and house collapse, and disrupting road and rail traffic, The showers led to water-logging in several low-lying areas of the metropolis, including Andheri, Kurla, Sakinaka, Chembur, Santacruz, Goregaon and Powai, and crippled the services of the public transport utility as well posed difficulties for the users of private vehicles. The island city recorded an average rainfall of 99 mm in the last 24 hours.

Odisha is experiencing widespread and intense monsoon precipitation, with several districts recording heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, under the influence of a well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining regions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the persistence of the system over the next two to three days, with the potential for further enhancement in rainfall activity across the state. The IMD has also issued a Red Warning for several districts, cautioning against extremely heavy downpours, while Orange and Yellow alerts remain in force elsewhere. The prevailing weather system has triggered waterlogging in low-lying areas, prompting the state administration to place disaster response agencies and district authorities on heightened vigilance.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that conditions are favourable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon into some more parts of Gujarat and the remaining parts of Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan during the next four days. The met department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over Madhya Pradesh, Coastal Karnataka, East Rajasthan, Telangana and Vidarbha till Sunday.
The weather agency also predicted heavy rainfall conditions over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Gangetic West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Marathwada, West Rajasthan and the southern parts of the country on Saturday. Delhi witnessed light rain bringing relief to people from the prevailing heat and humid conditions.
Heavy rains accompanied by gusty winds lashed several parts of Kerala on Saturday, leading to a rise in water levels in rivers and dams, inundation in low-lying areas and damage to property, prompting authorities to issue alerts and precautionary measures across the state. In Palakkad district, compound walls of two houses collapsed following heavy rainfall, while northern parts of Kozhikode, particularly the high ranges, witnessed intense downpours. In Idukki district, authorities opened the shutters of the Pambla dam as a precaution after heavy rainfall in the catchment areas led to a rise in the reservoir's water level, officials said.
