During Saturday night and Sunday morning Mumbai recorded heavy rainfall. Waterlogging was reported at several places in the city, including Borivali, Kandivali, Malad, Andheri, Chembur, Kurla, Gandhi Market, Hindmata, etc. In Chembur and Vikhroli areas at least 20 people died in rain related incidents. The wall of a house collapsed in the Vashi Naka area of Chembur killing seven people on the intervening night of July 17 and July 18 at around 1 am. BMC's disaster management cell said the 17 people were brought dead to the Rajawadi Hospital and two were discharged after being treated for their injuries. In Vikhroli, three people have died. All injured have been admitted to a hospital. "About 4-5 houses affected. 10 dead bodies have been retrieved by Local BMC and Fire brigade personnel before NDRF reached and 01 dead body of female has been retrieved by NDRF team," the National Disaster Response Force said in a statement.
According to BMC, the city recorded a rainfall of 156 mm followed by eastern suburbs reporting 143 mm of heavy rainfall and western suburbs reporting 125 mm of rainfall between 8pm on Saturday and 2am on Sunday. A red alert has been sounded in the city and people have been advised not to venture out in the open. Fifteen people have been rescued from Chembur's Bharat Nagar area and nine people from Vikroli's Surya Nagar, officials said, adding that those injured have been moved to nearby hospitals for medical attention. As many as 17 trains have been terminated shortly due to waterlogging on railway tracks at multiple locations in Mumbai and suburban areas. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the bereaved family of the deceased. He announced to provide Rs. 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister National Relief Fund to the kin of the deceased. Rs. 50,000 would be given to those injured.
