In Haiti, 30 people were killed in a stampede at a popular tourist site during an annual Orthodox Easter gathering. Officials said the incident occurred at the Citadelle Laferrière, a UNESCO World Heritage site, in the northern town of Milot. The stampede began near the entrance to the site and was worsened by heavy rain. Authorities have warned that the death toll could rise further as rescue and relief operations continue.
The Citadelle, built between 1805 and 1820 is the largest fortress in the Western Hemisphere and a powerful symbol of Haitian independence. Thousands of people visit the fortress during Holy Week, and in recent years the pilgrimages have turned into a gathering for youth. The activity the kids were attending, advertised on TikTok, was not authorized, Joseph said. Though the structure itself is massive, it has just one door to enter and exit, which can create dangerous congestions with large crowds
Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé extended condolences to the families of the victims and confirmed that an investigation has been launched, with all relevant authorities mobilised to assist those affected.
