The Congress on Sunday named senior Gujarat leader and state vice-president Bhikhabhai Rabari as its candidate for the July 30 by-election to the Manjalpur Assembly constituency in Vadodara, setting up a direct contest against the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Satish Govindbhai Patel.
According to information,the announcement was made by the All India Congress Committee (AICC), which said Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had approved Rabari's candidature for the by-election."The Congress president Shri Mallikarjun Kharge has approved the candidature of Bhikhabhai Rabari as Congress candidate for the ensuing by-election to the Gujarat Legislative Assembly from Manjalpur Constituency," the AICC said in a statement.

Rabari, a senior Congress leader from Vadodara, currently serves as the vice-president of the Gujarat Congress. He also held a ministerial position in the Madhavsinh Solanki-led Gujarat government during the 1990s.The ruling BJP had earlier announced former Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) councillor Satish Govindbhai Patel as its nominee for the bypoll. Patel has been elected to the VMC multiple times and has also served as chairman of the civic body's standing committee. He is a former BJP president of the Vadodara district unit.
The by-election was necessitated following the death of senior BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Yogeshbhai Narandas Patel on June 2 after a prolonged illness. An eight-time BJP legislator, Yogesh Patel represented the Manjalpur constituency and won the seat in the 2012, 2017 and 2022 Assembly elections.The Election Commission of India (ECI) has scheduled polling for the Manjalpur by-election on July 30. The last date for filing nominations is July 13, scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on July 14, and candidates can withdraw their nominations until July 16.Counting of votes will take place on August 3, while the entire election process is scheduled to be completed by August 4.The Manjalpur by-election is one of three Assembly bypolls being held on July 30, alongside the Bankipur constituency in Bihar and the Datia constituency in Madhya Pradesh.
