Goyal pushes India-Japan cooperation in chips, steel manufacturing

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday highlighted opportunities to deepen India-Japan cooperation in semiconductors, electronic components and steel manufacturing during his meetings with business and industry leaders in Japan.
During a meeting in Osaka with Katsumi Azuma, President and CEO of ROHM Co Ltd, Goyal said India’s rapidly expanding electronics ecosystem offers significant scope for greater collaboration and investment, according to agency reports.The minister also held discussions with key industry representatives in Nagoya, where he met Satoru Katsuno, Chairman of the Central Japan Economic Federation (Chukeiren). Goyal invited members of the federation to lead sector-specific delegations to India to explore opportunities in manufacturing, electronics, semiconductors, artificial intelligence and precision engineering.He said stronger engagement between Indian businesses and companies from the Chubu region could help build a stronger base for global exports and deepen India-Chubu economic ties.
Goyal also met Hideaki Omura, Governor of Aichi Prefecture, in Nagoya and discussed avenues to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment and industry. The discussions focused on enhancing linkages between Aichi’s industrial ecosystem and Indian businesses.The minister also conveyed his best wishes for the successful organisation of the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games and Asian Para Games, scheduled to be held next month.“Being a cricket fan myself, it will be exciting to see the Indian and Japanese men’s and women’s cricket teams compete at the Asian Games,” Goyal said.
Meanwhile, Goyal also held talks with Naohide Goto, President of Aichi Steel Corporation,on opportunities to deepen cooperation between India and Japan in steel manufacturing and technology.Goyal underlined that India’s strong manufacturing ecosystem offers significant potential for continued collaboration between the two countries.Speaking at the ‘India-Japan Next Generation Economic Partnership: From Chubu to India’ event in Nagoya, attended by representatives of the Central Japan Economic Federation and the Nagoya Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Goyal highlighted the potential for businesses from Central Japan to expand their engagement with India.He invited businesses, industry leaders and investors from the region to leverage opportunities in India, citing the country’s large market, skilled workforce, expanding manufacturing capabilities and increasingly investor-friendly business environment.
