Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal addressed the Traders’ Conclave – 2025 at the SKICC in Srinagar on Sunday, highlighting the government’s commitment to empowering local enterprises and fostering regional economic development. Organised by the Federation of Trade and Industry of India (FTII), the event was attended by key stakeholders including Sunil Singhi, Chairman of the National Traders Welfare Board, and J&K Cabinet Minister Satish Sharma. Ahead of the conclave, Goyal engaged with delegations from the MSME Development Forum and the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry to deliberate on trade challenges, including GST on handicrafts, horticulture value chains, and innovation infrastructure.
Speaking at the occassion, Goyal reaffirmed that “Vocal for Local” is not merely a slogan but a foundational strategy for India’s rise as a manufacturing hub and trusted global exporter. He announced plans to fast-track the establishment of a regional centre of the Indian Institute of Packaging in Kashmir and supported proposals for a Centre of Excellence for Startups and a solar power project at Lassipora. Addressing apple growers’ concerns, he assured a balanced policy approach to ensure fair prices. He also lauded the global appeal of Kashmir’s crafts, particularly Pashmina shawls, and cited recent diplomatic gifts as a testament to their cultural and commercial value.
Condemning the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Goyal praised the resilience and unity shown by Kashmiris and called for sustained peace to boost tourism. He highlighted transformational infrastructure projects such as the Vande Bharat Express and the Chenab and Anji bridges as key drivers of regional connectivity. Calling for more cultural and economic engagements in Kashmir, he urged traders to champion ‘Made in India’ products and remain steadfast in building a self-reliant, globally respected India. The conclave concluded with a renewed pledge to accelerate progress towards Viksit Bharat @2047, with a strong emphasis on local enterprise and inclusive growth.
