Goa Nightclub Fire: Magisterial probe ordered, CM vows strict action

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Sunday ordered a magisterial inquiry after 25 people, including four tourists, lost their lives in a fire at a night club in the Arpora village.Speaking to reporters, Sawant said authorities are examining whether the establishment complied with fire safety and construction norms. He extended condolences to the families of the victims and confirmed that the state government will provide compensation.“I’ve spoken to the Dean of the College. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered. What permissions the club obtained and who granted them will be thoroughly investigated,” Sawant said. He added that an arrest warrant has been issued against the club’s owners, while managers and other staff members have already been taken into custody. “Anyone found guilty will be jailed.”
Sawant also briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who expressed deep grief over the tragedy and assured full support to the state government during the ongoing investigation and relief efforts.“PM Modi called this morning and asked for every detail, including the condition of the injured. I briefed him fully,” Sawant said, adding that the government would take all measures to prevent such incidents in future.The prime minister announced an ex gratia of Rs2 lakh for the families of those who died and Rs 50,000 for the injured. In a post on X, he wrote that the fire incident in Arpora was “deeply saddening,” and extended wishes for the speedy recovery of the injured.

According to information from state officials, an FIR has been registered against the nightclub’s owner and general manager in connection with the fatal blaze. Sawant reiterated that they will be arrested and held accountable.The CM said initial findings indicate the fire began on the first floor of the club. Tight spaces and narrow exits trapped several guests inside. “Some tried rushing to the ground floor but got stuck there as well,” he said.Sawant noted this is the first incident of such scale in Goa and emphasised the need for a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause and responsibility.
