In Uttar Pradesh, a senior IPS officer Amitabh Thakur on Friday was arrested for allegedly helping to jailed BSP MP Atul Rai in a rape case and abetment to suicide . Rai is in jail for last two years. Thakur has been arrested by Lucknow police from his residence in connection with FIR lodged against him at Hazaratganj police station in this regard. The victim girl, who had put herself on fire along with her friend Satyam Rai recently in front Supreme Court. Both of them succumbed to their burn injuries. Police has said that victim girl had given an application to Varanasi police in last November making allegations against Amitabh Thakur. Thakur has also lodged a FIR in last December against the deceased rape victim girl.
Thakur has recently announced to contest assembly election against Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath from Gorakhpur. He had annouced his tour program to visit Ayodhya and Gorakhpur but police had put him under house arrest on August 21,2021 and not allowed him to conduct his tour. Thakur has also announced to float a political party. His wife Nutun Thakur is also a RTI activist. Thakur was retired by the government forcefully in various charges.
The victim and her complainant had set themselves on fire outside the Supreme Court on August 16. The duo had alleged conspiracy against themselves by the police and authorities including retired IG Amitabh Thakur. The incident resulted in massive action and former Varanasi SSP Amit Pathak was attached to DGP headquarters by the state home department.
