Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal survived a tense and chaotic knockout battle against Luka Modric’s Croatia in Toronto, sealing a 2-1 win. Substitute Goncalo Ramos's headed goal edged Portugal into the last 16 of the World Cup 2026 on Thursday after a gripping contest with Croatia. Ramos connected with a superb pass from Rafael Leao in the fourth minute of stoppage time to snuff out a Croatia team which had created the lion's share of the chances in sapping evening heat in Toronto.

Earlier, it was Ivan Perisic who opened the scoring for Croatia just minutes into the second half, punishing Portugal after Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes had let early opportunities slip against a defensively resolute Croatian side in the opening 45 minutes. Portugal's route back into the match came courtesy of a VAR intervention. Defender Renato Veiga was brought down inside the 18-yard box during a corner kick, and though the referee initially let play continue, he overturned his decision after being prompted to review the incident on the pitchside monitor. Ronaldo stepped up to the spot, coolly converting the penalty to level the scores at 1-1.
In a dramatic ending, Croatia thought they had equalised in the dying seconds but Josko Gvardiol's goal was chalked off for offside. The Croatians were left stunned by the decision, while Portugal's players celebrated.VAR intervened again, chalking off the Manchester City defender's goal due to an 'off-side' in the build-up play. Portugal will now face Spain in the Round of 16.
