Fadnavis inaugurates Sindoor Bridge,tribute to Armed Forces

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday inaugurated the newly reconstructed Carnac Road Over Bridge (ROB) in south Mumbai, now renamed as ‘Sindoor Bridge’, in a tribute to the Indian armed forces and their valour during Operation Sindoor.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Fadnavis said the bridge’s new name commemorates the Indian military’s recent offensive against terrorist bases deep within Pakistan, carried out in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack in May. “This renaming is a tribute to our armed forces and India’s defense capabilities. The Indian Army showcased exceptional courage and strategic precision during Operation Sindoor,” he stated.Vehicular traffic will be allowed to use the bridge starting 3 PM today, CM announced.
The bridge, which links the eastern and western parts of south Mumbai over the Central Railway tracks between Mumbai CSMT and Masjid stations, was originally known as Carnac Bridge—named after James Rivett Carnac, Governor of Bombay Province from 1839 to 1841. The original 150-year-old British-era structure had been declared unsafe by the Central Railway and was dismantled in August 2022.
The newly constructed ‘Sindoor Bridge’ is a key infrastructure project built by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in collaboration with the Central Railway. Spanning 328 metres, the bridge includes a 70-metre stretch over railway land and 230 metres of approach roads on both sides.
Designed and constructed using modern engineering techniques, the bridge features two steel girders—each 70 metres long, 26.5 metres wide, and 10.8 metres high—weighing 550 metric tonnes, mounted on reinforced concrete piers. According to the BMC, complex tasks such as the installation of girders over live railway tracks were executed during dedicated rail blocks in October 2024 and January 2025.
The civic body also noted that the eastern approach, including piling, civil works, and road surfacing, was completed in a record four months. The bridge has undergone successful load testing and received all required certifications, including structural stability clearance, safety approval, and a No Objection Certificate from the railway authorities.Once opened, the bridge is expected to significantly decongest key traffic intersections in south Mumbai, such as Walchand Hirachand Marg, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Road, and improve east-west connectivity across Yusuf Meherally Road, Mohammad Ali Road, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Road.
