An international nuclear disarmament meeting enters its last day on Friday with attention focused on whether a final document will be adopted after four weeks of negotiations.
The 2026 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, or NPT, opened at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on April 27. A third revised draft of the final document was presented on Thursday. At eight pages, it is significantly shorter than the previous 13-page draft.
The new version omits many expressions that have proven contentious. These include references to risks related to artificial intelligence and regrets over the expiration of a nuclear disarmament pact between the United States and Russia in February.
Regarding the Iran issue, the latest draft makes no specific mention of attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities by US and other forces. But it says, "Iran can never seek, develop or acquire any nuclear weapons." Iran is expected to push back.
Diplomatic sources say behind-the-scenes negotiations are continuing on other parts of the document as well.
The two previous review conferences failed to adopt a final document.
Do Hung Viet, president of the 2026 review conference, said the document is by no means perfect, but he called on participants to consider it "in a spirit of compromise and flexibility" to find common ground.
