In Bangladesh, the interim government of Muhammad Yunus has formed a high-level committee led by Education Adviser CR Abrar to investigate the departure of former President Abdul Hamid to Thailand. According to media report,Hamid left in lungi with his brother and brother-in-law for medical treatment by Thai Airways flight TG 340 at about 3:05am on Thursday, but his political opponents say that he has fled to escape being tried in Bangladesh. As per a senior official of the special branch of the police,‘We allowed him to cross the immigration as there is no travel ban against him either from the court or from the security agencies." Following Hamid’s departure, different quarters has demanded the resignation of the home adviser and punishment for the police officials concerned for assisting Hamid to leave the country.
Hamid, named in a case lodged on January 14 with Kishoreganj police station over the allegations of attacking protesting students during the July-August mass uprising, went to Thailand for treatment by Thai Airways flight TG 340 at about 3:05am on Thursday, said a senior official of the special branch of the police.
Before becoming the President of Bangladesh, Abdul Hamid was a Member of Parliament from Hasina's Awami League party. He had, in fact, started his political journey with the student wing of the Awami League -- the Chhatra League. The Chhatra League has been banned by the interim government of Yunus in October 2024. Hamid's house was among those demolished by fundamentalists and Islamic radicals during the Bulldozer Programme in February this year.
