The encounter between Portugal and Hungary on Tuesday saw a new record of all time leading scorer in European Cups. Portugal’s top player Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals and went past the record earlier set by French great Michel Platini. Ronaldo now has 11 goals in the tournament which is two more than Platini. Platini had netted nine times when he led France to glory in 1984. Portugal captain Ronaldo also celebrated another feat of his illustrious career. He became the first player to appear in five European Championships.
2016 Euro Cup winner Portugal begins title defense off to a wining start. They beat Hungary 3-0 in Group F encounter. All three goals came late in the second half. In the first half spirited Hungary had a chance to take lead when Schon’s shot landed the ball in Portugal’s net. But the match referee disallowed this for offside. The first goal for the winning team came from Raphael Guerreiro in 84th minute. Three minutes later Ronaldo scored 2nd goal. Portugal captain delivered the final blow to Hungary following a brilliant move in the injury time and sealed the match for his team.
In Group F clash of Titans, the current World Champions France also kicked off its campaign with a lucky win over four times winner of World Cup championships Germany. Lucky win in the sense that own goal gives France 1-0 win over Germany. Germany for the first time ever lost the opening game in the group stage at the European Championships.
The recall of experienced German defender Mats Hummels to the national team ended up in fiasco when he scored own goal to give France a 1-0 victory. Mats was trying to block Lucas Hernandez cross pass to French forward Kylian Mbappe but he mistakenly diverted the ball into his own goal post in the 20th minutes of the match. Both teams had chances to shot at their rival’s goal post. The host team’s best opportunity came in the first half but Ilkay Gundogan failed to put ball in the net. In the 2nd half, French players penetrated the German goal post twice but both goals were disallowed for offside. From the Death of Group F, Portugal and France with their opening game win are now leading the table with 3 points each.
