The tsunami watch for Hawaii has been cancelled following a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. According to local media reports, the tsunami watch was made effective for the state by the National Weather Service on July 19, 2025 at 9:03 p.m. HST. The earthquake occurred at 8:49 p.m. HST off Russia's Kamchatka region. The tsunami watch was cancelled at at 9:42 p.m. HST, less than an hour after the initial alert.

The most powerful, a 7.4 magnitude quake, hit the North Pacific Ocean just 144 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on July 20, 2025. The USGS has indicated there is a potential risk of tsunamis following this earthquake. his earthquake hit underwater in the North Pacific Ocean, 82 kilometers (51 mi) off the coast of Russia, 144 kilometers east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in Kamchatka, according to earthquakelist.org. The center of the tremors had a very shallow depth of 20 km. Shallow earthquakes usually have a larger impact than earthquakes deep in the Earth.

A second report was later issued by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 6.6 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 6.2.
The larger quake was at a depth of 20 kilometers and was 144 kilometers east of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, which has a population of 180,000, according to the US Geological Survey. A few minutes earlier, a quake with a magnitude of 6.7 was recorded nearby.
