EAM Jaishankar meets Ecuadorian counterpart, hold talks to boost ties

External Affairs Minister S.Jaishankar on Wednesday held talks with Ecuador’s Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld, focusing on expanding cooperation across key sectors including trade, agriculture, health, digital technologies and capacity building.Welcoming Sommerfeld on her first official visit to India, Jaishankar said the discussions aimed at strengthening the partnership between the two nations. “We discussed ways to deepen cooperation, including in trade, health, agriculture, digital and capacity building. Will cooperate closely in multilateral forums,” he said in a post on X.

Jaishankar also welcomed Ecuador’s decision to initiate the process of joining the International Solar Alliance and the International Big Cat Alliance, both India-led global initiatives. He noted that Ecuador is already a member of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure. The minister further announced that both sides have reached an agreement on funding for the implementation of Quick Impact Projects, describing it as a step forward in strengthening development cooperation.
Sommerfeld, who also holds the portfolio of Minister of Human Mobility, arrived in New Delhi earlier in the day for a three-day visit aimed at boosting bilateral ties. The Ministry of External Affairs said her visit would provide fresh momentum to India-Ecuador relations.During her visit, Sommerfeld is scheduled to pay tribute at Rajghat and hold meetings with Union ministers including J. P. Nadda, Piyush Goyal, and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita.
The visit builds on recent high-level engagements between the two countries. In November last year, Margherita visited Ecuador and met President Daniel Noboa, discussing ways to diversify cooperation across sectors such as agriculture, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, education, trade and healthcare.During that visit, both sides also signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between their diplomatic training institutions and jointly inaugurated the resident Embassy of India in Quito, underscoring India’s growing engagement with Ecuador.India and Ecuador established diplomatic relations in 1969, and their ties have steadily expanded through regular consultations and cooperation across multiple sectors.
