District sports school scheme powers Gujarat’s global athletic ambitions

The District Level Sports School (DLSS) scheme in Gujarat is playing a pivotal role in nurturing young sporting talent and preparing athletes for national and international competitions through a blend of education and professional training.Launched during the tenure of Narendra Modi as Chief Minister, the initiative is aimed at promoting holistic development by integrating academics with structured sports training. Currently, 39 DLSS institutions are operational across the state, benefiting over 12,000 athletes so far.
Implemented by the Sports Authority of Gujarat under the Sports, Youth and Cultural Activities Department, the scheme was introduced in 2013–14 with a dual focus on education and athletic excellence. Players are selected under two categories—young talent and proven talent—and are provided with free education, accommodation, meals, sports kits, uniforms, and stipends.Training under the scheme follows a scientific approach, with emphasis on fitness, technique, nutrition, and injury prevention. Over the past two years, DLSS athletes have secured 3,444 medals at the state level and 335 medals at the national level. Four athletes have also represented India internationally, winning one bronze medal.
Among its notable success stories is Elavenil Valarivan, an Arjuna Award-winning shooter and former DLSS trainee. She trained at Laxman Gyanpith School in Sanand and has gone on to represent India at major global events, including the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and the Paris Olympics 2024. Her achievements include gold at the 2025 Asian Championship, bronze at the 2025 World Championship, gold at the 2024 Rio de Janeiro World Cup, and silver at the 2024 Jakarta Asian Championship.Reflecting on her journey, she credited the DLSS scheme for providing world-class infrastructure, expert coaching, and a strong foundation that shaped her career.

Another example is Opinaben Devjibhai Bhilar from Dang district, who rose through the DLSS system to achieve international success. She won a gold medal at the Kho Kho World Cup 2025 in India, along with top finishes at national championships.Bhilar joined the scheme in 2014 after being identified during a state-level competition. She later trained at the Athletics Academy in Vadodara and credited the programme for her growth as an athlete. She now serves as a coach in Panchmahal district, mentoring young players.
