Dhaka: Students protest remark on Jamaat chief's post against women

In Bangladesh, Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) staged a protest march at Dhaka University. At Dhaka University(DU0, Gonotantrik Chhatra Jote, a coalition of seven left-leaning student organisations, brought out a torch procession on Sunday. Students, mostly from female dormitories, brought out a "broom and torch procession" from the Shaheed Minar area. “Women are powerful in every role, and together -- women and men -- we will build this country,” the protesters declared.During the procession, the students chanted various slogans, including “There is no place for those who harass women in my golden Bangla”, “Break the poisonous fangs of clerical fascism”, “You must apologise for calling women prostitutes”..
The protest was against remarks about working women allegedly posted from Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman’s X account, which the group said were objectionable and degrading. The protest began around noon after screenshots of a now-deleted post from Rahman’s verified account went viral. The post said women should not hold leadership positions and claimed that pushing women into workplaces exposed them to exploitation and moral decay.
Jamaat-e-Islami later said the account was hacked and the post did not reflect Rahman’s views. The remarks drew widespread criticism from political parties, rights activists and civil society, with JCD leaders saying they insulted working women. The episode has renewed scrutiny of Jamaat’s stance on women’s leadership after Rahman said in a recent interview that women could not lead the party and that no female candidates have been nominated for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
