Boxer and Congress leader Vijender Singh joined the BJP on Wednesday ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. The Olympic medallist had contested the 2019 polls as a Congress candidate from the South Delhi constituency.He joined the saffron party in New Delhi in the presence of BJP's National General Secretary Vinod Tawde in New Delhi.Notably, his resignation came within 24 hours after he reposted a tweet from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi.Shortly after joining the saffron party, Singh said, “I have joined the BJP in the interest of the nation and to serve the people. I want to help more and more people.”
Singh was the first Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal - a bronze - at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He also won silver medals at the 2006 and 2014 Commonwealth Games and bronze medals at the 2010 edition of the Games as well as the 2009 World Championships., "This is like a ghar wapsi (homecoming) for me. I had contested the elections in 2019. It is good to be back. The way sportspersons are getting respect in the country and abroad now is commendable," he said. "I would like to thank PM Modi and the BJP for the respect that sportspersons get under this government. I would like to be a part of this government, help people and show them the right path," he added.
