The coastal belt of Odisha experienced heavy rain and squally winds on Thursday morning with the sea condition remaining rough, as severe cyclonic storm ‘Dana’ approached closer to the state’s coast, the IMD said. The cyclone is likely to make landfall between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra Port in Odisha early Friday with wind speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour (kmph), it said.“It is very likely to move northwestwards and cross north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island close to Bhitarkanika and Dhamra during midnight of 24th to morning of 25th October as a severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph,” it said in the latest bulletin.The highest rainfall of 62 mm was recorded at Paradip, while Rajnagar in Kendrapara district received 24 mm rain,the Met Department said. Meanwhile, roads in some areas of Balasore, Bhadrak, Bhitarkania and Puri were blocked, after trees were uprooted due to strong winds, officials said.

Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, Manorama Mohanty said: “The severe cyclonic storm is likely to re-curve slightly towards west and west-southwards after landfall, triggering rain in southern Odisha around October 26. However, the landfall and wind speed predictions remain unchanged.” The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed 20 teams in Odisha and 17 teams in West Bengal in view of the anticipated cyclone Dana. NDRF DIG Mohsen Shahedi told media in New Delhi that more than 1 lakh 70 thousand people who are in the affected areas of Odisha have been evacuated. Kendrapara, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Jagatsinghpur, and Bhadrak districts of Odisha will be worst affected by ‘Dana’ along with very heavy to extremely heavy rainfalls, while the 9 other districts of the state will also experience heavy rainfalls under its impact. All air services from and to Biju Patnaik International Airport at Bhubaneswar have been cancelled from Thursday evening at 5 till 9 a m Friday morning.

The Odisha government has issued a high alert for the next 48 hours. The administration has started shifting people living in low-lying areas to multipurpose cyclone centres, and so far about two lakh fifty thousand people have been shifted. The Chief Minister of Odisha Mohan Charan Mahi is reviewing preparedness for the severe cyclone with secretaries and a special relief commissioner at Bhubaneswar. Odisha High Court, schools, colleges, universities, and many government institutions have been closed till Friday. Leaves of doctors and government employees have been cancelled, while a large number of passenger trains have also been cancelled. Fishermen have been banned from entering the sea. NDRF, ODRAF, and Fire Services teams have been deployed at strategic locations for prompt relief and rescue operations.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Thursday that the administration has identified over 3.5 lakh people for evacuation from low-lying areas due to the impending cyclone Dana, PTI reported. She urged residents to take precautionary measures and cooperate with both the administration and police. Currently, 2,43,374 people have sought refuge in shelters.
