Centre clears 5,000 PMAY-G homes for Manipur IDPs

In a significant relief measure for violence-hit Manipur, the Centre has approved the construction of 5,000 houses for the rehabilitation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by the ongoing ethnic unrest in the northeastern state.Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan cleared the proposal under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana Gramin (PMAY-G) after meeting Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh in New Delhi on Monday evening, officials said.
According to an official statement, the Union minister assured full support from the Centre to restore peace and normalcy in the state. The approval comes amid continued efforts to rehabilitate families displaced by the ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023.The clashes between Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and hills-based Kuki-Zo groups have claimed at least 260 lives and rendered thousands homeless. The violence triggered large-scale displacement, forcing many families into relief camps across the state.
Earlier this month, the Manipur government submitted a proposal seeking approval for 5,000 houses under PMAY-G for IDPs. In January, the state government had announced its target to resettle 10,000 internally displaced families by March 31.Officials had stated that around 16,500 displaced persons have already been resettled so far, even as rehabilitation efforts continue in phases.
