India has emerged as one of the world’s leading countries in solar and wind energy deployment, Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said on Thursday, highlighting the country’s growing focus on renewable energy, smart grids and energy storage systems.Addressing the 11th BRICS Energy Ministers’ Meeting in Gurugram, Khattar said India is rapidly expanding its renewable energy capacity while undertaking major reforms to create a modern and future-ready power sector.“The launch of this centre marks an important step in BRICS energy cooperation. It reflects our shared commitment to strengthen collaborations, promote innovation and build reliable and future-ready energy systems,” Khattar said.
The minister highlighted the changing dynamics of global power systems, noting that electricity grids are undergoing a transformation as renewable energy becomes a key driver of the global energy transition.“Power systems across the world have faced growing challenges. Today, with renewable energy becoming a central part of the energy transition, this approach is changing,” he said.Khattar said the grid of the future will need to manage real-time demand, integrate large-scale renewable energy, support energy storage solutions and enable consumers through digital technologies.

Emphasising India’s progress in clean energy, Khattar said the country is implementing one of the world’s largest smart metering programmes to accelerate digitalisation of the power sector and improve grid efficiency.“Today, India is among the world’s leading countries in solar and wind energy deployment,” he added.
India’s Energy Storage Roadmap
Speaking about energy storage, Khattar outlined India’s ambitious plans, saying the country is targeting nearly 100 gigawatts (GW) of pumped storage capacity against an estimated potential of 260 GW.He added that India is also aiming to develop around 80 GW of battery storage systems as part of efforts to strengthen renewable energy integration and ensure grid stability.India’s energy priorities under its BRICS presidency are focused on three major areas — energy security and sustainability, energy access and equity, and technology and innovation. The BRICS grouping currently includes 11 countries and represents nearly half of the global population and around 40 per cent of the world’s GDP.According to the Ministry of Power, the meeting is aimed at enhancing cooperation among BRICS nations on energy security, innovation and sustainable development while promoting practical solutions for secure, affordable and reliable energy systems.
