BRICS declaration flags nuclear risks, tariffs, condemns J-K terror attack

The BRICS group of nations unanimously adopted a joint declaration on Saturday, the first day of the annual summit in New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the adoption of the declaration, which covers conflict prevention, peaceful resolution of disputes and a multilateral approach to global issues. The BRICS joint declaration stresses the need for conflict prevention, including by addressing the root causes of conflicts. The bloc reiterated its commitment to resolving international disputes peacefully through dialogue, consultation and diplomacy, while advocating a multilateral approach that respects diverse national positions.
BRICS nations strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, regardless of its motivation, location, or perpetrators. The bloc condemned the April 22, 2025, terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 people were killed and several others injured. The declaration reaffirmed the commitment to combating cross-border terrorism, terrorism financing, and safe havens, while stressing that terrorism should not be linked to any religion, nationality, civilisation, or ethnic group.

The joint statement raised serious concerns over the growing use of unilateral tariff and non-tariff measures that distort trade and are inconsistent with World Trade Organization rules. The bloc also condemned unilateral coercive measures that it said are contrary to international law. It expressed concern over the growing risks of nuclear danger and conflict. The bloc called for greater efforts towards conflict prevention and peaceful resolution of international disputes through dialogue and diplomacy.
The BRICS joint declaration encouraged members to continue discussions aimed at finding practical solutions for cross-border payments among BRICS countries. The move is part of the bloc's broader efforts to strengthen financial cooperation and facilitate transactions among member economies.
