Israel’s offensive against Hamas intensified further as Israeli forces pushed deeper into the city of Rafah in southern Gaza, with Palestinian health officials reporting 19 deaths and dozens of injuries.As Israel expanded its operations, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated America’s strong opposition to a major military assault on the enclave that houses over a million Palestinians, saying that Israel would "be left holding the bag on an enduring insurgency" without an exit from Gaza and a post-war governance plan.Blinken said the United States was continuing to press Israeli leaders to provide a plan for Gaza once the war is finally over."Israel's on the trajectory, potentially, to inherit an insurgency with many armed Hamas left, or if it leaves, a vacuum filled by chaos, filled by anarchy and probably refilled by Hamas," he said.
Israeli forces sent tanks into eastern Jabalia in the northern Gaza Strip, with heavy aerial and ground bombardments. They also pushed deep into Jabalia camp, closer than the first time when they invaded northern Gaza. The Palestinian health ministry said the death toll in the war had exceeded 35,000 people.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a Memorial Day speech vowed to continue fighting until victory in memory of those killed in the war. Netanyahu said that Israel has "completed about half" of its war against Hamas in Gaza, "but we are committed to completing this sacred task".
Citing the growing scale of Israel's operations in Gaza and their impact on civilians, Egypt pledged support to South Africa’s ongoing lawsuit in the International Court of Justice accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza."The intervention in this case comes in light of the expansion in scope and scale of Israeli violations against civilians in Gaza," the Egyptian foreign ministry said, without specifying what the intervention would entail.
