BJP names 144 candidates in first list for Bengal, 47 for Keralam

BJP on Monday released its first list of candidates for Keralam and West Bengal Assembly polls. The party has nominated 47 candidates for the upcoming Kerala Assembly Polls. Union Minister George Kurian will contest the Kanjirappally seat, while Party State President and former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar will contest Nemom. Another former Union Minister, V Muraleedharan, has been fielded from the Kazakootam constituency. Former State BJP president K. Surendran will fight from the Manjeshwar seat, and Navya Haridas has been fielded from the Kozhikode North seat. Former IPS Officer R Sreelekha will contest from the Vattiyoorkavu constituency. The state will vote in single phase on April 9 while votes will be counted on May 4. Kerala has 140 seats and Left leader Pinarayi Vijayan has been the chief minister since 2016, leading the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government.

The Bharatiya Janata Party also released its first list of candidates for 144 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal, fielding several key leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari and Dilip Ghosh. While Dilip Ghosh has been fielded from Kharagpur Sadar, Suvendu Adhikari will contest the elections from two seats — Bhabanipur and Nandigram.

BJP leader Agnimitra Paul will contest the polls from Asansol South, while former Rajya Sabha MP Swapan Dasgupta will contest from the Rashbehari constituency.

This comes a day after the Election Commission announced that the Assembly polls in West Bengal will be held in two phases on April 23 and April 29.The counting of votes for the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026 will take place on May 4, along with that of Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu
