Former Union minister and BJP MP Babul Supriyo on Saturday announced that he will be quitting politics as he needs some time. In a long Facebook post, the singer-turned-politician wrote social work can be done even without being associated with politics. " He explained that losing the ministry has played some role in his decision. The Bollywood singer, however, made it clear that he wasn't moving to any other party, emphasising that he was a "one-team player". He has recently been dropped from the Union cabinet after his defeat in the West Bengal Assembly election. Earlier this month, he was replaced as Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change.
Supriyo also said he was quitting as MP. He joined politics -- and the BJP -- in 2014. With the BJP winning that year's general election, he was made the Union Minister of State for Urban Development. While he did raise the question "why did I leave politics?" Supriyo didn't give out a clear answer, only leaving tantalising hints over the reason for his removal as Union Minister. Thanking top BJP leaders like Amit Shah and JP Nadda for "their love", he clarified that his move wasn't aimed at "bargaining". "...they might think I'm 'bargaining' for a 'position'...I pray they don't misunderstand me, forgive me..." he wrote.
"Have listened to what my father, wife, daughter and a few close friends had to say. After listening to everything, I am saying that I am not going to any other party. I am confirming that I am not joining the Congress, not the CPM. Neither they have called me, nor I am going. I am a one-team player. Have always supported Mohun Bagan.. have done only party BJP West Bengal.. That's it!" the former minister wrote.
