Bihar CM flags run in Patna supporting women’s quota

In Bihar, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Friday flagged off a “fun run” in Patna to express support for the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, as discussions around the legislation continued in Parliament. The run, organised as a public outreach initiative, witnessed enthusiastic participation from citizens, particularly women, who covered the stretch from Digha roundabout to JP Setu. The Chief Minister inaugurated the event by waving the green flag and later addressed participants, highlighting the importance of women’s dignity, safety, and greater representation in governance.

Speaking on the occasion, Choudhary said the legislation seeks to provide 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies, calling it a transformative step towards inclusive democracy. He credited Narendra Modi for championing the initiative at the national level and acknowledged the contributions of former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in strengthening women’s participation in the state. The event reflected growing grassroots support for the law, with participants emphasising the need for enhanced representation of women in decision-making roles.
Although the Women’s Reservation Bill was passed in 2023 and received assent from President Droupadi Murmu, its implementation remains linked to the completion of the next Census and the delimitation exercise. The government is currently exploring ways to expedite the rollout, including the possibility of using 2011 Census data to fast-track the process ahead of upcoming elections. Discussions are also underway regarding increasing the strength of the Lok Sabha to facilitate reservation without significantly altering existing representation, along with plans for a fresh delimitation framework.
