Bengaluru breaks 133-year record for single-day rainfall in June

The Southwest Monsoon has officially arrived in Karnataka, bringing widespread rainfall across the coastal regions and marking a significant climatic event in the state.In a historic weather event, Bengaluru on Sunday witnessed record rainfall as the city broke a 133-year record with the highest rain in a single day in June. Many areas in the city witnessed waterlogging, affecting traffic movement and normal life.The Karnataka capital recorded rainfall at 111.1 mm on June 2, marked by ongoing thundershowers with the onset of the Southwest Monsoon in Karnataka.The city had witnessed 101.6 mm of rainfall on June 16, 1891.

The weather department has issued a yellow alert, forecasting cloudy skies and intermittent rain or thundershowers from June 3 to 5.During this period, temperatures are expected to range from a high of 31-32 degrees Celsius to a low of 20-21 degrees Celsius.Sunday's heavy rainfall resulted in significant waterlogging and traffic disruptions in various parts of the city. Notable areas affected included the Hebbal Underpass, KFC Road to Gunjur Road, Chikkajala Kote Cross, Benniganahalli Railway Bridge, and Hebbal Circle, which experienced severe traffic congestion.

The weather forecast for Bengaluru indicates generally cloudy skies with intermittent spells of rain or thundershowers from June 2-5, with further rainfall expected on June 8 and 9, as per the weather department's predictions.According to C S Patil, head of IMD Centre, Bengaluru, the southwest monsoon has further advanced over Karnataka and a yellow alert has been issued for some districts till June 5."Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada in coastal Karnataka, Bagalkote, Belgavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Koppal and Vijayapura in north interior Karnataka and Ballari, Bengaluru (rural and urban), Chikkaballapura, Davangere, Chitradurga, Hassan, Mysuru, Tumakuru in south interior Karnataka are likely to get heavy rainfall in the next two days," he added.
