The Indian Premier League (IPL) was on Friday suspended indefinitely due to the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. A cloud of uncertainty had loomed over the future of the ongoing edition since the cancellation of Thursday's match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala midway following air raid alerts in neighbouring cities of Jammu and Pathankot. "It does not look nice that cricket goes on while the country is at war," a BCCI official told PTI, confirming the suspension of the league, which was to wind up on May 25 in Kolkata.
So far, 58 matches have been completed this season, including the abandoned game in Dharamsala. At the time of suspension, 12 league fixtures and four playoff matches—including the final in Kolkata—were still to be played across venues such as Lucknow, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Jaipur.
Now, the immediate priority is to ensure the safe return of players and officials to their respective locations. Several foreign players and staff are expected to depart as early as Friday. This is the second time the IPL has been suspended midway through a season. In 2021, the tournament was postponed after a COVID-19 bio-bubble breach, with the second phase later held in the UAE.
