Australia: 20 injured as gunman opens fire on Sydney street

In Australia, a man is in custody after allegedly shooting up to a hundred bullets into a busy Sydney street, wounding twenty people. The man who allegedly unleashed at least 50 bullets on random members of the public in Sydney on Sunday night had no known mental health history, according to police. Police exchanged gunfire with the 60-year-old man in Croydon Park, located in Sydney's inner west, in what they described as a "highly dangerous operation". The man currently in custody is Artemios Mintzas. He is understood to be an employee of Sydney Trains.
Police said shots were fired "indiscriminately" at passers-by over a two-hour period. Later, Mintzas was arrested and police still seeking to uncover a motive. Croydon Park is a multicultural suburb with mixed-residential housing that is popular with young families. At a press conference on Monday, Acting Superintendent Stephen Parry said  Mintzas was "speaking freely with police". He  had no connections to organised crime or terrorism, police said. "It is incredible no one has died or received serious injuries because of this," Acting Superintendent Parry said.
A 30-calibre rifle was seized after tactical officers stormed the unit where the alleged gunman was firing from. Acting Commissioner Trent King said the shooting did not appear to be drug or alcohol-related. Police said  Mintzas did not have a gun licence and detectives were probing whether the gun was legally owned.Mass shootings are relatively rare in Australia.A ban on automatic and semi-automatic weapons has been in place since 1996, when a lone gunman killed 35 people in Port Arthur, Tasmania.
