At Least 9 dead, 22 injured as bus falls off road in Andhra Pradesh

At least nine people lost their lives and 22 others sustained injuries after a bus veered off the road and fell into a valley in Andhra Pradesh’s Alluri Sitarama Raju district early Friday. The vehicle, which was travelling from Chittoor to neighbouring Telangana, was carrying 37 passengers, including the driver and the cleaner. Six people escaped unharmed.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Amit Bardar said the accident took place around 4:30 am on the Chintoor–Maredumilli ghat road near a Durga temple. “At least nine people died and 22 were injured as the bus slipped off the ghat stretch. The bus did not plunge entirely into the valley—it overturned and got stuck,” Bardar told PTI, noting that four of the injured are in critical condition.Preliminary information suggests that the driver may have missed a sharp curve due to dense fog in the area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Mothugudem police station. According to the SP, the passengers were en route to the Sri Rama temple in Bhadrachalam, Telangana, from Chittoor.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident and offered his condolences to the bereaved families. In a statement, PM said, “Saddened by the loss of lives due to a bus accident in the Alluri Sitarama Raju district of Andhra Pradesh. My thoughts are with the affected individuals and their families during this difficult time. Wishing a swift recovery to the injured.”The Prime Minister also announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased, while those injured will receive ₹50,000.
