An attempt on the life of former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah while he was attending a marriage ceremony at the Royal Park in Greater Kailash, Jammu has been thwarted, police said. “The security deployed with Abdullah immediately swung into action, thwarted the attempt and took the accused into custody, who was later identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, son of Ajit Singh, a resident of Purani Mandi in Jammu,” police said in a statement.

After his arrest, the attacker was seen sitting on a chair, telling police he's a resident of Puranas Mandi in Jammu. The 65-year-old attacker appeared to have no remorse and has reportedly said that he was waiting for this moment for last 20 years. However, two police personnel – an inspector and a sub-inspector – overpowered him, despite this, the accused managed to fire one shot before he was disarmed and taken into custody.Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary was also present at the scene when the incident took place. According to officials, Farooq Abdullah and Choudhary had come to greet a National Conference leader on the occasion of his son’s wedding.
