Newsinc24 Team Rural local bodies across Assam have received more than Rs299 crore under the grants recommended by the Fifteenth Finance Commission of India for the financial year 2025–26, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj said in a statement.The assistance includes Rs256.60 crore as the second instalment of untied grants for FY 2025–26. The funds will benefit 27 District Panchayats, 182 Block Panchayats and 2,192 Gram Panchayats across the state, enabling local institutions to address development priorities and location-specific needs more effectively.In addition, Rs42.70 crore has been allocated to three Autonomous District Councils — Bodoland Territorial Council, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and Dima Hasao Autonomous Council — to strengthen governance and support development initiatives in these autonomous regions.
The grants are recommended by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj and the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, and are released by the Ministry of Finance in two instalments during the financial year.Untied grants allow Panchayati Raj Institutions to address location-specific development requirements under the 29 subjects listed in the Eleventh Schedule of the Constitution. Meanwhile, tied grants are aimed at supporting essential public services such as sanitation, sustaining open-defecation-free status, and improving drinking water supply systems, including initiatives like rainwater harvesting and water recycling.
