Buddhist site of Sarnath inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List

The ancient Buddhist site of Sarnath has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee. India now has 45 UNESCO World Heritage properties, comprising 37 Cultural, 7 Natural and 1 Mixed site, reflecting our country’s rich and diverse heritage. The Sarnath is the site where Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon (Dhammachakkappavattana) to his first five disciples, setting the Wheel of Dharma in motion.

Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has described it as a defining moment for India’s cultural heritage. In a social media post, Shekhawat said that Sarnath is a timeless beacon of peace, wisdom, and compassion. He said that it reflects the profound spiritual and philosophical contributions of Indian civilisation to humanity. Mr Shekhawat said that the inscription reaffirms the nation’s enduring role as a cradle of ideas that continue to inspire the world across generations.
