Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Sunday inaugurated the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Naranpura, Ahmedabad, built at a cost of Rs825 crore, and dedicated it to the nation. He expressed confidence that the city is on course to becoming the “sports capital of India”, with world-class infrastructure already in place.Speaking at the inauguration, Shah said Ahmedabad now hosts the world’s largest Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, the under-construction Sardar Patel Sports Enclave, and the newly inaugurated Veer Savarkar Sports Complex. He noted that preparations are underway to host 13 international events by 2036, including the 2029 World Police and Fire Games, the likely 2030 Commonwealth Games, and potentially the 2036 Olympics.“Sports are the soul of India. With our young population and world-class infrastructure, the country should aim to lead the world in sports,” Shah said. He added that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Indian sports have undergone a transformation with modern facilities, transparent selection processes, and stronger international representation.

Highlighting the facilities, Shah said the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex is the largest and most modern sports complex in the country, spread over 1.19 lakh square metres. It features an Olympic-class swimming pool, a Centre for Sports Excellence, a Sports Science and Nutrition Lab, an Indoor Multi-Sports Arena, and a Community Sports Centre. It is fully equipped to host both national and international competitions.Shah underlined that the sports complex has already received global praise, with international federation representatives describing it as one of the most modern facilities worldwide. He said the complex, named after freedom fighter Veer Savarkar, would inspire athletes to win medals for the nation.He also pointed out that India’s sports performance has improved significantly over the past decade. Between 2014 and 2022, Indian athletes won 15 Olympic medals, compared to 20 medals between 1948 and 2012. Paralympic medals increased from 8 to 52, and Deaflympic medals rose from 2 to 22 during the same period.
The inauguration was attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Agriculture Minister Raghavji Patel, Minister of State for Sports Harsh Sanghavi, Ahmedabad Mayor Pratibha Jain, and several MPs, MLAs, and senior officials.Chief Minister Patel hailed the complex as a landmark in Gujarat’s sports development, linking it with the state’s vision of “Vikas bhi, Virasat bhi.” He said Gujarat is now well-prepared to host mega global sporting events, including the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympics.Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya described the facility as a “moment of pride” for India, noting that the new National Sports Policy aims to foster social and economic development through sports and strengthen the country’s position globally.The Veer Savarkar Sports Complex will also host upcoming events such as the Asian Aquatics Competition, expected to attract more than 1,200 athletes from around the world,according to information.
