Ambush on Assam Rifles near Myanmar border injures 4 personnel

Suspected militants ambushed a patrol team of the Assam Rifles near the Myanmar border in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district on Friday morning, leaving four personnel reportedly injured. The area, located along a sensitive border stretch, falls within a Kuki-dominated region.According to a statement issued by a defence spokesperson, the Assam Rifles team came under sudden fire, which was immediately retaliated “with control and caution,” keeping civilian safety in mind. Additional reinforcements have been rushed, and a combing operation is currently underway.While the official statement did not specify casualties, police sources confirmed that four soldiers sustained injuries in the attack.
Friday’s ambush comes two months after a similar incident on September 19 in Bishnupur district,a Meitei-dominated area, where two Assam Rifles personnel were killed and five others injured. In that case, attackers belonging to a Meitei armed group were later arrested.The latest strike occurs amid ongoing efforts to stabilise Manipur, which has been grappling with ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki communities since May 2023.
