The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) widened its lead in Nandigram and Rejinagar in West Bengal as counting of votes for bypolls to five Assembly seats and one Lok Sabha constituency continued on Friday, according to early trends released by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

BJP candidates on Friday widened their leads in Nandigram and Rejinagar seats of West Bengal, where counting of votes was underway for the assembly by-elections, while the Congress emerged as the runner-up in both constituencies, according to early trends. BJP's Hasirani Rath was leading by 9,600 votes at the end of the first round of counting in Nandigram, while Congress candidate Milan Pradhan was in second place, as per the trends indicated by news channels. In Rejinagar, Sakharav Sarkar secured 11,614 votes after the second round, while Congress candidate Mohammad Abdullahil Kafi was at a distant second with 581 votes. Aam Janata Unnayan Party candidate Gulam Nabi Azad polled 446 votes, according to the trends shown by news channels. The Election Commission is yet to release official figures confirming the leads. The BJP was also leading in the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency in Assam, while Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) was ahead in both Assembly constituencies of Madurantakam and Dharapuram.In Puducherry, the All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) emerged victorious in the Thattanchavady Assembly bypoll, according to the results.

The counting covers five Assembly constituencies — Nandigram and Rejinagar in West Bengal, Madurantakam and Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu, and Thattanchavady in Puducherry — along with the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam.The emerging trends are being closely watched as the results indicate the electoral standing of the contesting parties in the respective constituencies.
