AI-focused rejig: YouTube offers voluntary exit programme for US staff

YouTube is preparing for a major transformation centred around artificial intelligence, with the company announcing a voluntary exit programme for some of its US-based employees. The move marks the platform’s first major restructuring in a decade under CEO Neal Mohan’s leadership. In a note to employees, Mohan said YouTube’s product division is being reorganised to align with its growing ambitions in AI-driven content creation, recommendations, and user experience. While no positions are being forcibly eliminated, the voluntary buyouts signal an intent to streamline teams ahead of the company’s next phase of growth.
“Looking to the future, the next frontier for YouTube is AI,” a company spokesperson stated. The reshuffle mirrors parent company Google’s broader push to embed artificial intelligence across its products, with CEO Sundar Pichai urging teams to boost productivity using AI tools.Under the new structure, YouTube’s product organisation will be split into three key divisions — Viewer Products, Creator & Community Products, and Subscription Products — all reporting directly to Mohan.
According to information, viewer products, led by Chief Product Officer Johanna Voolich, will manage ●YouTube’s main app, Search and Discovery, Living Room, YouTube Kids, Learning, and Trust and Safety.
●Subscription Products, overseen by Christian Oestlien, will include YouTube Music and Premium, YouTube TV, Primetime Channels, Podcasts, and Commerce — areas that have become strong revenue drivers, with more than 125 million paying subscribers.
●Creator & Community Products, currently under interim leadership by Voolich, will focus on expanding creation tools, Shorts, Live, and generative AI features for creators.
Reflecting on YouTube’s evolution, Mohan said AI represents the platform’s next major leap. “YouTube has paid over $100 billion to creators and partners and has remained the top streamer in the U.S. for over two years,” he noted, adding that the restructuring aims to position teams to “make the most of this opportunity.”The voluntary exit programme applies to eligible U.S. employees within Mohan’s direct-reporting organisation. The company did not disclose details about severance packages or participation numbers.YouTube’s move follows a broader industry trend as major tech firms, including Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft, realign their workforces amid accelerated AI investments. Amazon recently announced 14,000 job cuts as part of its own AI-focused reorganisation. While YouTube maintains that layoffs are not part of this restructuring, the message is clear: the platform is entering an AI-first era. The changes will take effect on November 5.
