At least 216 terrorists, 36 civilians and 22 personnel were killed in the days-long operation launched in response to terror attacks at multiple places in the restive Balochistan province, the Pakistan Army said on Thursday. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the Pakistan military’s media wing, announced in a statement that it has “successfully concluded” the operation, code named Radd-ul-Fitna-1, that was launched on January 26. The Pakistan Army said that the operations were initiated in Panjgur and on the outskirts of Harnai district after credible and verified intelligence confirmed the presence of terrorists. The military launched counteroffensive operations in Balochistan after the BLA said it launched coordinated attacks in several parts of the province last Friday and Saturday.
Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Iftikhar Ahmed urged the Security Council to impose sanctions against the separatist Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) militant group and designate it as a “terrorist” group, after its recent coordinated attacks in southwestern Balochistan province. Ahmad said that after the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, “externally sponsored and foreign-funded proxy terrorist groups” such as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and the BLA have got a “new lease of life.”
Meanwhile, the BLA has held control over large parts of Nushki district since Saturday, when the group launched coordinated attacks across more than a dozen cities in Balochistan under the second phase of “Operation Herof” or Black Storm. According to The Balochistan Post report, Armed fighters stormed several Pakistani forces’ camps in the city, including the ISI headquarters, after carrying out suicide attacks at entry points. Fighters also took control of police stations and government offices, expelled the commissioner and deputy commissioner from the city and assumed control of administrative affairs. In a statement on Wednesday evening, BLA spokesperson Jeeyand Baloch claimed that “at least 310 personnel and operatives” of the Pakistani army, Frontier Corps, police, Counter Terrorism Department and army-backed militias had been killed. Report further said that armed men abducted Superintendent of Washuk Police Shafiq Shahwani at gunpoint and took him to an undisclosed location. Police officials have formally confirmed the abduction.
Pakistan’s largest and poorest province, mineral-rich Balochistan borders Iran and Afghanistan and is home to China’s investment in the Gwadar deep-water port and other projects. Balochistan has been the site of a decades-long insurgency led by ethnic Baloch separatists seeking greater autonomy and a larger share of its natural resources.
