Two top ITBP mountaineers- Ratan Singh Sonal, Commandant and Anoop Kumar, Dy Commandant successfully summit Mt. Manaslu in Nepal, the 8th highest mountain in the world at 8,163 Metres (26,781 Ft) above sea level. This expedition was planned from 7 September to 5 October, 2021. Both the mountaineers have earlier brought laurels for the force by scaling many peaks in the Himalayas. Ratan Singh Sonal had earlier this year also summited Mt Lhotse (8516 M)- world’s 4th highest peak.
These ITBP officials had also led the difficult Nanda Devi search and rescue operations ‘Daredevils’ of ITBP which rescued 4 foreign nationals and brought back 7 dead bodies from more than 20,000 feet altitudes in June-July, 2019.ITBP holds a distinguished record in the field of mountaineering and the mountaineers of the Force had completed more than 220 mountaineering expeditions including 4 expeditions to Mount Everest over the years which is a record.
The Force has been awarded with 7 Padma Shri and 14 Tenzing Norgay Adventure Awards for its remarkable contributions towards the field of mountaineering. More recently, ITBP has climbed 4 peaks of 6000 meters plus height in 2020 and 2021 in Ladakh, HP and Uttarakhand.
