India beat West Indies in the first ODI of a 3-match series to celebrate the landmark of their 1000th ODI in international cricket with a dominant 6-wicket victory. Rohit Sharma completed his 44th ODI fifty and added 84 runs for the opening wicket with Ishan Kishan. India asserted their authority over Kieron Pollard-led West Indies who were looking flat at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. India needed a performance like this to prove that the 0-3 defeat in South Africa last month was just an aberration. The Men in Blue looked a different unit under Rohit's leadership as the star opener got off the mark in his first match as the team's full-time ODI captain. It was also the first win of 2022 for India's senior men's national team after they lost the last two Tests and the 3 ODIs earlier this year in South Africa.
Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar spun a web around the West Indies batters. Chahal was playing his first ODI at home in close to 3 years and Sundar was playing an ODI for the first time in 4 years but the duo picked up 7 wickets between them to bowl West Indies out for 176.West Indies kept losing wickets in the middle overs and were reeling at 79/7 at one stage. However, smart batting by Jason Holder and Fabien Allen helped Windies reach a respectable total. Holder was dismissed on 57(71). India gunned down a 177-run target with 6 wickets and 22 overs to spare to take a 1-0 lead in the 3-match ODI series.
