Himachal:11 cloudbursts, 4 flash floods, Mandi death toll rises to 10

The death toll from cloudbursts and flash flood-related incidents in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh has risen to 10 with the recovery of five additional bodies. The search for 34 missing people is underway, officials said on Wednesday. The state witnessed 11 cloudburst incidents, four flash floods and a major landslide on Tuesday, most of which occurred in Mandi district, disrupting normal life. Cloudbursts were reported at four locations in Gohar, three in Karsog, two in Dharampur, and one in Thunag, Mandi.

The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) reported extensive damage across Himachal Pradesh, with 282 roads closed, 1,361 transformers disrupted, and 639 water schemes affected statewide due to the heavy rains. Mandi district alone accounts for a significant portion of this damage, with 182 roads blocked and numerous power and water supply systems impacted. Mandi alone recorded an exceptionally high rainfall of 253.8 mm since Monday evening. Despite the grim situation, rescue teams, including two teams each from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), along with police and home guards, have successfully rescued 370 people, including 316 in Mandi,

Himachal Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said the state has suffered an estimated loss of Rs 500 crore since the onset of monsoon on June 20. He acknowledged the worrying rise in cloudburst incidents in recent years and urged people to stay away from riverbanks and drains. Deputy Commissioner of Mandi, Apoorv Devgan, said rescue teams, police and home guards are working round the clock to locate missing people and move affected families to safer locations, news agency PTI reported. All major rivers and streams in Mandi are in spate. Over 1.5 lakh cusecs of water were released from Pandoh Dam after its level rose dangerously to 2,922 feet, close to the 2,941-foot danger mark.
