Donald Trump’s desperate hopes of being awarded a Nobel Peace Prize may be severely hindered, as the majority of the committee that decides who gets the honor has publicly condemned the president. At least three of the five members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee panel, which selects the recipients of the prestigious award, have spoken out against Trump for his attacks on the press and concerns he is “dismantling” U.S. democracy in his second term, The Washington Post reported.President Trump has made no secret of his desire to be handed a $1 million Nobel Peace Prize, insisting he has stopped multiple wars since January, including conflicts between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and Israel and Iran. Speaking to reporters at the Oval Office on Friday, Trump took credit for having “settled” seven wars, claiming the number increases to 10 if you include “pre-wars.”
One major hurdle for Trump is that members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee do not appear to in favour of the president. Jorgen Watne Frydnes, chairman of the panel, mentioned the president by name while decrying “the erosion of freedom of expression even in democratic nations” during 2024. “President Donald Trump launched more than 100 verbal attacks on the media during his election campaign,” Frydnes told PEN Norway, a group that promotes freedom of expression, last December.
Another panel member, a former Norwegian minister of education, Kristin Clemet, offered a more scathing attack on the first 100 days of Trump’s return to the White House. “No one can deny that some of the problems Donald Trump has said he will do something about are real. But many of the solutions he chooses, and the way he proceeds, are deeply disturbing,” Clemet wrote for the liberal think tank Civita in May. “After just over 100 days as president, he is well underway in dismantling American democracy, and he is doing everything he can to tear down the liberal and rules-based world order.” A third committee member, Norway’s former state secretary in the foreign ministry, Gry Larsen, has also been a public critic of the president for years.
Every year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee selects laureates from hundreds of nominees. Its five members are appointed by Norway’s parliament in line with the instructions of 19th-century Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel. Winners are announced each October in Oslo. Some countries, including Israel, Pakistan and Cambodia, have already nominated Trump for brokering peace agreements or ceasefires since he returned to office in January.
Trump has claimed credit for cooling tensions between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan after skirmishes earlier this year, and last week hosted the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Washington to address ending decades of hostilities. As per media reports,President Donald Trump called Norway’s Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg out of the blue last month to discuss trade tariffs — as well as his bid to win the Nobel Peace Prize. This was not the first time Trump had raised the prize in discussions with Stoltenberg, said report. Norwegian media reported that Trump cold-called Norway’s finance minister last month, asking about a nomination, and discussing tariffs.
Meanwhile, in US, the Trump Cabinet has assumed the form of a lobbying group. And such blatant is the lobbying that a video of Cabinet members praising Donald Trump has been televised to create pressure."All the President's men and women took turns to praise him," in the meeting that last half the work day, reported The New York Times.Over three hours, aides and top officials openly praised Trump’s leadership. Labour Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer unveiled a giant banner of Trump at the Department of Labor, calling him a "transformational president" for American workers. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent highlighted his role in restoring trust and security in government. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins credited him with reviving Christian values and inspiring young Americans.
Critics have questioned whether Trump qualifies. California Governor Gavin Newsom said, "He wants a Nobel Peace Prize while deploying Marines against his own people? He didn’t bring peace; he brought the battlefield home". If he were to win, the real estate tycoon-turned-politician would become the fifth United States president to receive the prize, following Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter and Trump’s longtime rival Barack Obama.
