Thailand closes Cambodia border as territorial tensions escalate

Thailand has imposed restrictions on all travellers heading into Cambodia, as the two countries remain locked in a bitter border dispute. According to media reports, the ban applies to any vehicle or person attempting to cross into Cambodia from Thailand. The Thai military stated that the new restrictions reflect the current security situation. Relations between the two countries have reached their lowest point in over a decade, following armed clashes along the border last month that resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier.The Royal Thai Army has imposed tighter border control measures, prohibiting all Thai nationals employed in Cambodian casinos and entertainment venues from leaving the kingdom, effective on Tuesday.
Under new protocols, Thai nationals employed in all gambling establishments, including casinos and entertainment venues in Cambodia's Poipet, are prohibited from crossing the border. The army cited the safety of both Thai and Cambodian citizens residing along the border as a top priority.
In the aftermath, both nations have enacted retaliatory measures. Cambodia has banned imports from Thailand, including fruit, vegetables, electricity, internet services, and even Thai television dramas and films.The latest flare-up was triggered after a brief clash in May left one Cambodian soldier dead. Both governments have since announced measures designed to punish the other, including Cambodia's recent suspension of all Thai fuel and gas imports.
