In the United States, Ronald L. Rowe Junior has been appointed as the acting chief of the US Secret Service following the resignation of Director Kimberly Cheatle. Rowe was serving as Deputy Director of the Secret Service. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas confirmed the appointment. “The Secret Service is the greatest protective service in the world, with one of the most difficult and solemn missions in government," added Mayorkas. "I have the utmost confidence in Deputy Director Rowe and the men and women of the Secret Service, who put their lives on the line every day and deserve our full support.”
Rowe’s appointment came just a few hours after Cheatle’s resignation, which followed a Congressional hearing on Monday when Cheatle acknowledged that it was “the most significant operational failure at the Secret Service in decades” that led to the attempted assassination of former US President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, earlier this month.
The US Secret Service has been facing scrutiny after a 20-year-old man, identified by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as Thomas Matthew Crooks, armed with an AR-style rifle was able to get close enough to shoot and injure former President Donald Trump.Rowe also reportedly briefed lawmakers last Wednesday about the status of the investigation into the shooting − and into the Secret Service failures.
