Ranya Rao confesses use of hawala money to buy Gold:DRI

Kannada actor Ranya Rao has confessed that money used for the purchase of gold was routed through hawala channels, DRI told a court on Tuesday. During Ranya Rao's bail plea hearing, advocate Madhu Rao, representing the DRI, said that authorities issued a notice under Section 108 to initiate a judicial enquiry against the actor. The investigation aims to determine the extent of the financial irregularities and any potential violations of the law.  The actor was arrested earlier this month for her alleged involvement in a gold smuggling case.
After the confession, the authorities initiated action and issued a notice under Section 108 of the Customs Act for a judicial inquiry into the matter. The proceedings are reportedly a part of a judicial probe and not a police interrogation, as mandated by the invoked section. Ranya Rao's bail plea has been rejected twice so far, once by a lower court, and another by the Special Court for Economic Offences. Arguments in the latest bail plea hearing have concluded, and the court has reserved an order for March 27.The authorities are trying to determine the extent of the financial irregularities that have occurred in the case, along with any potential violations of the law. The DRI seized 14.2 kilograms of gold from her person, worth approximately Rs 12.56 crore.
