Techie suicide case: Police arrest wife, her mother and brother

Karnataka police has arrested Atul Subhash's estranged wife, her mother and brother in connection with the suicide of the techie. Subhash ended his life due to alleged harassment by his wife and her family, leaving behind a 25-page death note on December 9. Nikita Singhania, wife of 34-year-old techie Atul Subhash, her mother Nisha and brother Anurag have been arrested in an abetment to suicide case, days after Atul died by suicide after accusing Nikita and her family of harassment and extortion.
While Nikita was arrested from Gurugram, her mother and brother were arrested in Prayagraj. Her uncle Sushil, also an accused, is on the run. The three accused, police said, were arrested Saturday and brought to Bengaluru late at night. They were produced in court today and remanded in custody for 14 days. The arrests come after the Bengaluru City Police filed a case of abetment to suicide against Nikita and her family members. Based on a complaint by Atul's brother Bilas Kumar, the police registered an FIR against Atul's wife and her family. They have been booked for abetment of suicide. Nikita lived with their son in Delhi, where she worked for a multinational IT firm.
Atul Subhash, a resident of Manjunath Layout in Bengaluru, was found dead in his apartment on Monday. In a 25-page suicide note and an 80-minute video, he alleged harassment by his estranged wife and her family. Atul, originally from Bihar's Samastipur, was found dead at his Bengaluru flat on Monday. Police found a detailed note at his home, with every page starting with "justice is due". In his suicide note and video, Subhash alleged that he married Nikita in 2019 after finding her on a matchmaking website. The couple had a son the next year. He alleged that Nikita and her family would ask him for huge amounts of money to set up businesses. Arguments broke out when he refused and she eventually left home in 2021 with their son.
The police investigation revealed that Subhash was involved in a contentious legal battle over divorce and child custody, which he claimed contributed to his emotional distress. Singhania and her family members had demanded Rs 3 crore to withdraw cases against Subhash and Rs30 lakh for visitation rights to see his son. This led Subash into a mental distress and he decided to end his life.Subash reportedly emailed his death note to several individuals and shared it in a WhatsApp group of an NGO he was associated with. He also hung a placard in his home that read, “Justice is due.” A team of Bengaluru Police on Friday reached Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur, the native of the accused to investigate the case. The accused have already sought for an anticipatory bail, asserting their innocence in connection with Subash’s suicide, which created a national outrage.
