In Uttar Pradesh, two staff members of Sharda university in Greater Noida were arrested on Saturday after a second-year bachelor of dental surgery (BDS) student died by suicide in her hostel room on Friday night, police said. In a statement, Sharda University said a high power inquiry committee has been constituted to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident and to recommend any further institutional measures. "The University is fully cooperating with statutory authorities conducting their own processes," the Director of Public Relations said. "All required documentation and access have been extended, we will continue to cooperate transparently," the Director added.
A second-year BDS student, Jyoti Sharma from Gurugram, died by suicide in her hostel room in Greater Noida on Friday night. Sudhir Kumar, Additional DCP of Greater Noida, said, "Two staff members from the management of the university have been arrested on the basis of the complaint lodged by the family members of the student." The woman's body has been sent for a post-mortem, he added. "The woman's family and her classmates have been assured of a swift and transparent investigation," he said.
As per reports, a suicide note found in Jyoti’s room accused two professors and the university administration of mental harassment. She wrote that she had been mentally harassed and humiliated for a long time, which caused her distress. Jyoti expressed a desire for the accused to face legal action. She reportedly named the two staff members and said they are responsible for her death. After the incident came to light, students protested against the university administration, alleging negligence. They said Jyoti was stressed due to accusations of forging signatures.
