CBI arrestsTMC leader Anubrata Mondal in cattle smuggling case

In West Bengal,TMC leader Anubrata Mondal was arrested by the CBI on Thursday in connection with a cattle smuggling case, just days after he skipped another summons by the Central agency.  They were accompanied by a convoy of 30 cars. The CBI locked him in and questioned him for more than one-and-a-half hours before picking him up from his stronghold, Birbhum. A massive crowd gathered outside his house as he was whisked away by the probe agency. Mondal was arrested from his residence in Bolpur. Mondal’s bodyguard Saigal Hossain has also been arrested by the probe agency. The arrest was carried out after Kolkata's SSKM Hospital said he did not require admission. His name came up in the cattle smuggling scam case after the CBI registered an FIR in 2020.

According to the CBI, between 2015 and 2017, over 20,000 cattle heads had been seized by the Border security force as they were being smuggled across the border. He is TMC's Birbhum district president. Mondal skipped multiple summons, citing health issues. The CBI had issued 10 summons to him, but he appeared on only two occasions. The agency arrested him for not cooperating with the probe. Anubrata Mondal is the second TMC leader arrested by the CBI after Partha Chatterjee who is currently in jail for his alleged role in the teacher recruitment scam.
